Stars Who Got Their Start in Horror Movies

It's that time of year when little witches and goblins ring our doorbells for free candy and every creak we hear in the night freaks us out just a little bit more than usual. True, we're easily spooked. That's why we'll be watching "Celebrity Ghost Stories" during the day on Sunday.

But you know what's really scary? Some of the career choices that now mega-stars were forced to make in their early acting days. It's hard to remember a time before Johnny Depp was Johnny Depp. But back in the day, Captain Jack Sparrow had to take a job in "A Nightmare On Elm Street." Check out Johnny and some of the other stars who started in cheesy horror flicks before they became household names.

Petite Passion: Nostalgic Candy

We recently discovered a new store called Rocket Fizz. It sells a trillion (pretty sure that's an exact inventory) different kinds of soda pops like root beers and saraaparillas. While that's cool, we're not really fancy beverage girls. What we do totally love, though, is candy. And the first time we walked into Rocket Fizz, we thought we had been transported back in time to the summer we spent at a lake cottage and had to take a boat to the local store. Inside they had hundreds of kinds of penny candy. And so does Rocket Fizz. Although it costs a little more than a penny, it's still a considerably cheap thrill to buy a candy necklace or some wax lips and relive a little yesteryear.

Rocket Fizz currently has four locations (Camarillo, California; Burbank, California; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Las Vegas, Nevada). But if you're not lucky enough to live near any of them, here are some other places to buy yourself a nostalgic sugar rush.

Celebrity Love Children

We were surprised to learn recently that almost 40 percent of the babies born in the U.S. in 2007 were delivered by unwed mothers. Frankly, we're bored with the lack of controversy. Celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Richie are making it acceptable to have kids out of wedlock. And just this week Jude Law's new baby (at least according to the DNA tests) was on the cover of Hello magazine. We miss the good old days of the scandalous celebrity love child. So we decided to relive some of the better baby-mama scandals of the past and present.

We Want Our Brian Boitano Back

Okay, we may write about Pop Culture for a living but really, we’re not freaks… really. But we have to admit (and you might know this from our September 13th post) but we are kind of mildly obsessed with “What Would Briano Boitano Make?” (again, not in a stalker-like nature). Now, we’re not normally the kind of people to call in to “American Idol” or “So You Think You Can Dance” and cast our votes. But when “WWBBM?” abruptly fell off the Food Network schedule after just three episodes, we freaked (no, we’re not exaggerating… we freaked) and we actually emailed the cable channel to see what was up.

Thankfully, this was their reply:

What You Don't Know About Tyra Banks

We'll lay it on the line right from the get-go. There's NOT a lot that people don't know about Tyra Banks. After all, she exposes herself a gazillion times a week for all the world to see on her talk and reality shows. If anyone knows how to talk about herself, it's Tyra. Still, we were able to unearth a few gems about America's Top Self-Promoter that you probably don't know.

Our Favorite Bloodsuckers

Halloween’s just a few days away, and the latest vampire movie "Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" hits theaters today. And while we are big fans of the fanged creatures, even we have possibly hit our threshold for the night stalkers. Still, we couldn’t resist sitting down with a glass of red wine and sinking our teeth into some great vampire flicks. Here’s our list of the top 20 bloodsuckers, past and present:

Petite Passions: Playing Cards

When was the last time you picked up a deck of cards? No, playing on-line poker doesn’t count. We’re talking a tangible pack of 52 glossy new cards. When we were little they provided hours of entertainment. We could engage in a good battle of W-A-R for hours. On a lonely afternoon, we could play solitaire to pass the time. If we were feeling ambitious, the construction of a delicate house of cards would be our focus. Or, if we were feeling bratty, we’d torture each other with a game of 52 card pick-up (that just requires throwing the deck up into the air and forcing your sister to clean them up before your mother came rushing into the room to figure out what all the yelling was about).

Cards are good and you can get them at a lot of places for as little as $1.25. Pick some up on your next trip to CVS or your local pharmacy and play a game of Go Fish for us.

"The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette": Where Are They Now?

News broke today that Season 13 "Bachelor" Jason Mesnick proposed to runner-up Molly Malaney (the one he picked after breaking up with Melissa Rycroft on national TV). We still think Melissa was the real winner, shining on "Dancing with the Stars," stepping in as a commentator on "Good Morning America," and getting engaged to a nice guy. But the Jason and Molly announcement got us wondering what the other "Bachelor/Bachelorette" alum are up to. Here's what we know.

Dude, What Happened To You?

We don't think it's a surprise to anyone that there's a double standard in Hollywood when it comes to looks and weight loss. Why is it that Jessica Simpson and Hilary Duff get creamed for putting on a few pounds while Russell Crowe and Tom Hanks get awards for it? Actresses very rarely get to use the excuse that they were "doing it for the role," since, typically, leading ladies must be a size 0 to even be considered for a part.

We want to be perfectly clear: we aren't judging any of these dudes. We totally get what happens to humans as we age. Weight sticks, skin sags, and no one looks 21 forever. We're simply pointing out that when the aging phenomenon happens to a woman, she gets kicked in the perfectly straight white teeth while guys seem to get off scot-free.

And so, without further adieu, we ask some of Hollywood's leading men: Dude, what happened to you?

Shortest Celebrity Marriages

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom have been married for almost one month, which is a pretty big milestone for them since it's the length of time they dated before they made it official. Rumors have been circulating since day two (OK…really since before the wedding) that the union is already in trouble.

But with the Hollywood track record of short marriages, can you blame anyone for being skeptical? Tinseltown is filled with celebrities who impulsively wed, only to split up within a year. The number of famous couples that don’t make it into double-digit months is staggering. And a few, like Britney Spears and her high-school pal Jason Alexander, barely last days. (They managed to clear the 48-hour hurdle, with seven hours’ change.)

When both spouses work in entertainment, the countdown to implosion seems to run louder and faster than everyone else’s.

Ah, the age-old question: Can fame and love coexist? If these short-lived celebrity marriages are any example, the answer seems to be no.

The Best "Saturday Night Live" Hosts EVER

"Saturday Night Live" was on shaky ground for us last season. Once the post-election season kicked in, there wasn't a whole lot to laugh about on the late night show. But we were willing to go into a new year with an open mind.

So far the legendary sketch comedy show has been underwhelming due, in large part, to the less than stellar hosts that have been gracing the stage at 30 Rock. If Meagan Fox is the best pick you can make to start the season, clearly there’s some dubious casting choices a foot. And, even Drew Barrymore (who set the record last week as the woman who has hosted the most), didn’t have a single memorable moment.

Now there’s news that Taylor Swift has signed on for the November 7th episode. Oh boy. The obvious Kanye West joke aside, she doesn’t strike us as a treasure trove of comic gems and we find it impossible to believe that she's going to go down in history as one of "SNL's" best hosts ever. Wondering who does make that illustrious list? Well, here are our picks.

Our Favorite Gay TV Characters

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the historic first March on Washington for gay rights. We've certainly come a long way since the late '70s, when Anita Bryant's anti-gay campaign and Harvey Milk's assassination sparked outrage and helped fuel the movement in support of gay civil rights. Same-sex marriage is now legal in several states, and even the "Newlywed Game" is now gay friendly, as George "Mr. Sulu" Takei and his partner, Brad Altman, take part as the first gay married couple to compete on the show.

While TV broadcasters can't take all the credit for the growing mainstream acceptance of gay marriage, they generally do consider how shows will play in Middle America. So we're taking a look at some of our favorite characters who've helped shape the portrayal of gays on TV. And we're not talking about the no-holds-barred, anything-goes world of cable — we're talking about the-censors-are-watching, prime-time network TV.

Celebrity Nicknames and Aliases

In a not so surprising shark jumping career move, Jennifer Lopez seems to be giving herself a new nickname… Lola. But you’d think the woman who fought so hard for so long to shake the monikers J.Lo and Bennifer, would take the more sophisticated route and not hang her hopes on another gimmick… let alone maybe try to record a good song worth listening to. But to some degree we guess it’s unavoidable, it seems like the biggest stars always have nicknames. Some use their Sasha Fierce aliases to rebrand themselves, while others come up with their own alternate identities they use when making reservations and checking into hotels. A lot of these names are pretty clever and funny, so we present to you -- and Lola -- some of our favorite celebrity nicknames and alleged aliases.

Best TV Siblings EVER!

Every Sunday night we watch "Brothers and Sisters" and have our weekly cry for two reasons. One, because the show's emotional story lines always get us where it hurts. And two, because it makes us a little homesick for our own brother and sisters who live far away. Coming from such a close family, we've always been drawn to TV shows that revolve around siblings. And so, here's a look back at some of our favorites.

Best TV Ad Men and Women

We know that ads can be sexy, but we never realized how sexy ad men could be until we met Don Draper. Usually by season three of most shows we’re getting bored with the same old thing. But we truly feel like the already acclaimed “Mad Men” is truly hitting it’s stride in season three and has never been better. We just can’t get enough of the cigarette smoke-filled, martini-soaked drama.

Yes, Don Draper is mmmm-mmmm good. And he certainly has come up with some great advertising campaigns. But is he the greatest TV ad executive in entertainment history? Take a look at our other favorite TV ad men and women and decide for yourself.

Looking Good at Any Cost: Celebrity Plastic Surgery

In the new Tina Fey cover story for this month's Harper's Bazaar, Tina proclaims Botox is not for her and working out is selfish. We always we knew we liked Tina Fey. She's our kind of girl. And her blatant dis of Hollywood's vanity driven lifestyle choices got us asking that age-old question, why can't people just be happy with what God gave them? Why is a nose with a bump in it so much worse than a button nose? When did everyone decide that lips had to be big and puffy to be sexy? It's hard not to blame Angelina Jolie, isn't it?

And while some celebs have had their "deviated septums" repaired (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) with tasteful results, others have taken it so far they barely have a nose left at all.

These days so many older stars hardly look their age, it seems obvious that they've spent a lot of money on improvements, even if they deny going under the knife. Other celebrities, however, have owned up to at least some of the work done on their faces over the years, especially when they've been unhappy with the results.

So from least to most tasteful, we give you the best and worst of celebrity plastic surgery (and yes, collagen and Botox DO count).

Check out the Photo Gallery: Stars who've admitted to plastic surgery.

Biggest Film Flops and Fiascoes

We love Drew Barrymore so we were really hoping that her directorial debut, "Whip It," would be a huge success. After all, she's been in the movie business for almost 30 years – we figured she'd have picked up a lot of skills over time. But not only did Drew fall short on her opening weekend, but she came in sixth place – way behind "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" (which had been out for three weeks) and "Toy Story/Toy Story 2 (3D)" (films that came out over ten years ago). The total box office for the roller derby disaster’s opening weekend? A meager $4,650,812. Talk about getting whipped.

The movie isn't the first big screen flop and it won't be the last. But hopefully it won't go down in history with "Howard the Duck," "Glitter," and "Gigli" as one of the biggest big screen fiascoes of all time.

"The Biggest Losers:" Where Are They Now?

Season 8 of "The Biggest Loser: Second Chances" is in full swing, and you might notice a few familiar faces, such as Amanda Arlauskas. She was chosen by Season 7 viewers to join the cast this fall. And in keeping with the "second chances" theme, producers are also bringing back fan favorite Daniel Wright. He started last year's "Biggest Loser: Couples" as the heaviest contestant in "BL" history, tipping the scales at 454 pounds. Eliminated after just four weeks, he kept working at home, weighing in at 312 at the finale. Now even though that's a 142-pound loss, he's still heavier than most "Loser" participants are on Day 1. So, producers brought Dan back to the ranch to help him continue his journey.

Seeing him got us wondering what has happened to other "Loser" winners. Have they kept the weight off? Are they continuing to live healthy lifestyles? Find out as we reveal what the winners and some of the "eliminated winners" have been doing since leaving campus.

Is "Dancing with the Stars" Really a Big Career Boost?

"Dancing with the Stars" is back and bigger and better than ever. We're going out on a limb right now and saying we predict that Kelly Osbourne will take home the mirror-ball trophy. She has a tear-filled Ozzy on the sidelines and, shockingly, she's got the moves. But as we watched the parade of faded celebrities take to the dance floor, we wondered if doing this show actually boosts the careers of the stars or whether it just provides a second 15 minutes of fame. Here's our look at the past contestants whose careers seemed to get the biggest boost from their turn on the dance floor.

David Letterman's Top Ten Most Insane Moments

Last night marked one of the oddest moments in David Letterman's long TV history. If we thought Joaquin Phoneix and Andy Kaufman set a bizarre tone, nothing prepared us for Dave's long and detailed tale of extortion and intra-office promiscuity that led to grand larceny charges against CBS employee, Robert J. Halderman. The latest odd "Late Night" moment for sure but certainly not the only. We just couldn't resist creating a list of the "Top Ten Most Insane Letterman Interview Moments."

“The Amazing Race” Cast: Where Are They Now?

We wanted to see what past "Amazing Race" contestants are up to now that they've chased Phil Keoghan around the world, eaten the slimiest foods, scaled the tallest buildings, and screamed at the most cab drivers across the globe.

The interesting thing we discovered is that it's difficult to track them down. And while it's complete speculation, we do have a theory why. If you sign up to do "The Race," you're not out for instant celebrity or a ticket to red carpet events. You aren't attempting to get your own reality show or drop a new CD. You truly want the adventure of a lifetime racing around the world -- and the million dollars would be nice. Here are some of most interesting alumni of "TAR." Very few of them are leading exciting, glamorous lives, and we love them for it.

Rob Frisbee and Brennan Swain - Season 1 Winners
The ID under their pictures on "The Amazing Race" Season 1 always read "Lawyers/Best Friends." Rob and Brennan both worked at the same law firm in Los Angeles when they went on the first season of the show, and both left that law firm after they won. Since then, Rob started his own law practice and dedicated his time to writing. You can find his two self-published novels on Amazon. Both "The Meteth Chronicles" and "A Sea of Time" hit the bookshelves in 2002, but with no new works since, it seems that Rob's writing career may have been short-lived. Or maybe he's just working on his yet-to-be-completed masterpiece. Brennan is also still a lawyer, but he's one of the few "Race" contestants to try to work his 15 minutes. He has hosted "Taste of Lexus" and "Reality Remix" and has been a correspondent for "Extra," "On Air with Ryan Seacrest," and "Camp Reality."

Chris Luca and Alex Boylan - Season 2 Winners
The "Lifelong Friends" from Boston grew up without a lot of money, so the $1 million windfall did change their lives. Chris Luca and Alex Boylan used the money to start CC Investments, a real estate company. Chris also got married (not to anyone from the show) and settled down in Florida after spending a few wild months in Los Angeles (and Vegas on the weekends), while Alex has let his adventurous spirit soar. He has hosted several PBS series, including "At the Chef's Table" and "Animal Attractions" and has produced two documentaries about surfing: "Dropping In: Panama" and "Dropping In: El Salvador." He most recently formed Around the World Productions with "Survivor's" Burton Roberts and filmmaker Zsolt Luka. The company has created online travel shows, including "Around the World for Free" (he travels across the globe with little to no money and relies on the generosity of locals) and Rachael Ray's "Rach to the Rescue."

Reichen Lehmkuhl and Chip Arndt - Season 4 Winners
Reichen Lehmkuhl and Chip Arndt probably gained the most notoriety from their experience on "The Race." At the time, they were life partners living in Los Angeles. Reichen was an ex-Air Force Captain, flight instructor, and model, while Chip had worked as investment banker and a public relations and marketing manager. The pair met in 1999 and had a commitment ceremony in 2002, one year before "The Race." And while not legally married, they requested to be ID'd as a married couple on the show, stirring up quite a bit on controversy among conservative "Race" watchers.

The couple split six months after the show aired, and after that Reichen made headlines for his brief relationship with Lance Bass. He also became a host and actor. He had his own show on Q Television, "The Reichen Show," and did small roles on "Dante's Cove," "Days of Our Lives," "The Young and the Restless," and "Frasier." In addition, he continued modeling and put out two semi-nude calendars.

After seeing the negative reaction by some viewers to the gay "Race" couple, Chip became a very active LGBT advocate. He has been the spokesperson for numerous groups, including the Point Foundation, the Human Rights Campaign, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation. He organizes and participates in numerous AIDS walks and rides, including the upcoming Washington, D.C., AIDS Walk this October. Last year he was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. By being named to represent Florida in the Electoral College, he became the first openly gay man in Florida to cast an electoral vote.

Chip and Kim McAllister - Season 5 Winners
Before going on "AR5," Chip and Kim McAllister had hit rock bottom. Their multimillion-dollar information technology company had been taken over by their partners, and they'd been ousted. The couple was broke and unsure of their next move when they were cast on "The Race." Their dedication to each other and their faith brought them across the finish line first and changed their lives forever. Currently, they both do public speaking engagements about happy and healthy marriages, and they've started their own production company. Chip has directed several short films and corporate videos. They say they dream of hosting their own TV show to encourage happy marriages.

Jonathan Baker and Victoria Fuller - Season 6 Sixth Place
Jonathan and Victoria were the most talked about contenders on "AR6," not for winning but for their seemingly disrespectful relationship, culminating in what appeared to be film producer Jonathan physically shoving his wife, the ex-Playmate Victoria, when they arrived at the mat on leg five. Even mild-mannered host Phil Keoghan felt he needed to step in and say something. The couple was eliminated shortly after that, and they maintain that they are a loving couple and were misrepresented on TV. Victoria and Jonathan are still married and have had a baby girl since finishing "The Race." Jonathan has a production company and owns a day spa in Southern California (we're not sure we'd go to Jonathan for a dose of tranquility, but we hear the place is nice). One year after "The Race," Victoria posed for Playboy again and made appearances on "Battle of the Network Reality Stars," "Kill Reality," and a reality-star edition of "Fear Factor." Nowadays, she's focusing on her art. She makes Pop art paintings and sculptures that are mostly Playboy-themed.

Uchenna and Joyce Agu - Season 7 Winners
Uchenna and Joyce Agu will go down in "Amazing Race" history for the episode where Joyce shaved her head in order to jump in front of the other teams. They also beat out "Survivors" Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich, who came in a very close second. But before coming on the show, the couple was in dire financial straits. He worked at WorldCom, and she worked at Enron. Both lost their jobs and their life savings in the scandals that surrounded those companies. But then they entered and won "The Race." They also competed in the All-Stars season but were eliminated early on. After the show, they started an organization in Houston, Texas, dedicated to helping local charities, particularly those focused on abused, neglected, and orphaned children. The Great Raise is a mini "Amazing Race," in which teams compete in challenges around Houston to win money for the participating charities.

Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich - Season 7 Runners-Up
Past "Survivor" contestants Rob and Amber were the first celebrities to participate in "The Amazing Race," and because of that they faced a lot of obstacles. But they were also given a lot of attention and aid by locals who recognized them all over the world. Many of their fellow contestants felt they had an unfair advantage, or just plain didn't like their tactics. But they managed to make it to the final episode, where they were edged out by Uchenna and Joyce. Shortly after "The Race" Rob and Amber's wedding was televised on CBS in a two-hour special, and then Rob attempted to become a professional poker player in "Rob and Amber: Against the Odds." Unfortunately for fans of the controversial competitor, Rob's latest TV project, "Tontine," remains on hold. But with their reality TV shows behind them for now, Rob and Amber started on their greatest adventure. They welcomed a baby girl, Lucia Rose, in 2009.

BJ Averell and Tyler MacNiven - Season 9 Winners
BJ and Tyler, or more commonly known to "Race" fans as "the hippies," were some of the more entertaining competitors of the whole series, and no one ever could have predicted that their laid-back style would result in their win. We don't think they ever once raised their voices or lost their tempers with each other. Instead, it was smooth, calm sailing straight to the finish line. Both BJ and Tyler have stayed involved in entertainment since finishing "AR9." BJ has been acting, most recently in "As Advertised," which was screened at this summer's Independent TV Festival in Los Angeles. Tyler had an uncredited part in Will Smith's "The Pursuit of Happyness" (he was the hippie who stole Will's bone density scanner). In addition, in 2007 he stared in a documentary called "I Ran Iran" about his attempt to run the 1000-mile length of the country (he was kicked out at mile 100), and in 2008 he was in a comedy called "Wrestling Mongolia," playing a man who wrestled 100 Mongolians. On his Website he says that in 2009 he "ate a sandwich."

Mel and Mike White - Season 14 Sixth Place
Season 14 of "The Amazing Race" ended just four moths ago, so it's really too soon to do a "where are they now?" on any of the contestants, but we couldn't write about "TAR" without mentioning one of our favorite teams, Mel and Mike White, the openly gay father/son team. Mike, a writer ("School of Rock") and actor ("Chuck & Buck"), was cast in Season 13 of the show alongside director Jon Kasdan, but they were dropped before filming started. Producers asked Mike back for Season 14, but this time he was teamed up with his dad. Mel spent the better part of the '60s, '70s and '80s as a ghostwriter for the Christian right, penning speeches and books for Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Billy Graham. We're guessing none of them were too happy when he came out of the closet in 1994. Mel is a best-selling author, director and producer, as well as a minister who has founded an organization called SoulForce, dedicated to justice for the LGBT community. Since finishing "The Race," Mel is back at work with SoulForce, and Mike is developing four new film projects, including "School of Rock 2: America Rocks."
